The "Bury you head in the sand" approach to Electronics and Water Vapour

   

 

Understanding how the vapour permeability of electronic systems and enclosures can cause them to fail can be hard.  There are two approaches – the head in the sand approach or testing this critical characteristic. Versaperm has introduced a system based on its new high-speed equipment - which can often turn around results within 30 minutes to 24 hours, instead of the weeks taken by conventional measurement techniques.
Coatings, cases and packages are mainly designed to keep out liquid water and many of the materials they use can be virtually useless when it comes to water vapour - silicone, cellulose, EVOH or PVOH are examples of this.

And to make matters worse, once moisture permeates in, it condenses into a liquid and can't get out again!
Versaperm can precisely test and measure vapour permeability not just for material samples but also finished components, subsystems and enclosures.  Permeability can be measured for any vapour including water vapour, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and every other non-proscribed gas.

Results are typically accurate in the Parts Per Million (PPM) to Parts Per Billion (PPB) range and it can measure multiple components, material samples, seals or enclosures all at the same time. It can also control environmental conditions including temperature ( -80 to over +1000 C ), pressure, partial pressure and humidity. Versaperm system's work with all of the vapours commonly present around electronics, including hydrocarbons, solvents, CO2 and the gases used during manufacture.

Measuring assembled electronics systems is especially important because processes, such as thermoforming, extruding, moulding, heating, sealing or pressure can all dramatically change its ability to keep water vapour out.
